Bharat has been subjected to repeated bouts of invasions and colonization, which, combined with post-independence glorification of colonialism, have left deep scars on the Indian psyche. As a result, many Indians have internalized a sense of cultural confusion and insecurity. This occurs because their civilizational values have been repeatedly challenged and weakened, resulting in an ongoing identity crisis. This crisis is even worse for those who were forced or tricked into changing their religion, whether through violence, threats, or offers of money and benefits. It is against this backdrop of cultural neurosis that Ghar Wapsi or the act of coming back to one’s original faith, becomes extremely significant.
